Reading the axes

The price axis

The scale on the right of the chart is the price axis. It shows the price represented by each vertical level. A point higher on the chart represents a higher price.

The chart displays Apple's price history. Our example candle is from 11 April 2024 and is marked with an X.

Two horizontal lines have been added to the chart. The upper line passes through the candle's high. The lower line passes through its low.

Follow each line towards the price axis. The price label attached to the line shows its exact value. Use the upper line to read the candle's high and the lower line to read its low.

Traders also use horizontal lines to mark key price levels, including support and resistance. Support is a price area where a fall has previously paused or reversed. Resistance is a price area where a rise has previously paused or reversed. Marking these areas makes it easier to see how price reacts when it returns to them.

TradingView also provides a Horizontal Line drawing tool. You can find it in the drawing toolbar. Try adding a line to the chart and moving it to a candle point.
